How does ChatSEO pick your competitors?

How the competitor list is built from Google results, and how to fix it during onboarding and later in the site settings.

During your first analysis, ChatSEO suggests a list of competitors. Here is how it is built, and how to fix it.

How the list is built

  1. ChatSEO reads your homepage and works out your business, your offer, and the search a customer would type into Google to find what you sell.
  2. It runs that search on Google and looks at the top 10 organic results, in your country and language.
  3. It only keeps the sites that do the same job as you. A media site, a comparison page or a directory ranking on the same search is not a direct competitor: it gets left out.

Your own site is of course excluded from the list.

Why the list can look off

  • It relies on a single search: if your business covers several lines, some competitors may be missing.
  • If ChatSEO misread your offer, the search it ran is not the right one. Fix your positioning during onboarding: that is what drives the search.
  • If no site doing the same job shows up in the top results, the list can be empty. That happens, and it does not block anything.

Fixing the list during onboarding

  • Remove a competitor that does not belong.
  • Add a missing one by entering its domain (like competitor.com).
  • Confirm with That's the right list, even if it is empty.

Fixing the list later

You can edit your competitors at any time:

  1. Click your profile in the bottom left corner, then Settings.
  2. Under Workspace, open Sites.
  3. Select the site.
  4. Open the Competitors tab.
  5. Add or remove domains.

You can save up to 10 competitors per site. Once your list is saved, that is the one ChatSEO uses in its analyses.
